Camp History In September of 2001 my husband, John suffered a stroke at the age of 55. That simple event in our lives has forever changed them. Following the stroke, John couldn't speak, walk, or understand much of what was going on around him. As most stroke survivors know, it is very hard work down the road to recovery. About two years after the stroke, I read an article about a camp for stroke survivors who had aphasia. After reading that story, I knew that I was meant to pursue the dream of having a similar camp. My family has had a lifelong love of camping so planning and executing the camp wasn't particularly frightening. With the help and support of our local Central Illinois Stroke Council, American Heart Association, American Stroke Association, Caterpillar Foundation, Illinois Neurological Institute, and especially Dr. David Wang, we were able to realize our dream. The first camp was held in September of 2004. As the years go by, we meet more and more people through the camps and have expanded to program, holding multiple camps each year. People from seven states have traveled to central Illinois to enjoy the Retreat and Refresh experience. Marylee Nunley

Camp Mission Our mission is to provide a weekend camping experience for stroke survivors and caregivers. The retreat includes education, socialization, relaxation, great food, emotional support, and fun for all. It is an opportunity for everyone to relax and get rejuvinated.
We strive to continue to find new ways to educate our participants on such topics as speech and language resources, handicapped recreational equipment, diabetes, physical therapy, depression, nutrition, new stroke treatments, and more.
